Celebrities in the Perfume Business
What do Celebrities Actually Do in the Perfume Industry?
The extent to which a celebrity is involved in the designer perfume that is sold with their name on it can vary dramatically (no pun intended!). Some celebrities turn the designing job over to the pros and simply give their approval on the finished products. Other celebrities get involved from the conceptualization stages all the way up to the marketing of the designer perfume. Celine Dion is one of the stars who says she was involved in every aspect of the development of the designer perfume that carries her name, but that doesn’t mean she donned a lab coat and actually mixed the the potions in her kitchen when she was between studio gigs or not on tour. It's more likely that she was involved in the development process to decided just what kind of scent she wanted to be associated with. She also had a large part in designing the bottle and the marketing of her newest line of fragrances, a job far more suitable to her talents and one that does not require a degree in chemistry.
Jennifer Lopez is another celebrity who likes to be involved in the production of her own designer perfume. Jenny from the hood actually did work at a cosmetics counter once, so she knew precisely what she wanted her signature fragrance to smell like. The company that worked out the fragrance combination freely gives J Lo the credit for adding that hint of sake aroma that tops off the perfume. And it was Ms Lopez herself who wanted the design of the bottle to include a faux diamond ring or necklace on the neck as an allusion to her love of wearing jewelry. By being involved with every aspect of her perfume’s development, she ensured that the perfume genuinely reflects who she is. Paris Hilton, on the other hand, doesn’t claim to be involved in every aspect of her own perfume designs. Ms Hilton is a woman who either knows her limitations or knows how to delegate. (Or maybe it just seemed too much like work…) She does, however, take a big role in the promoting and marketing of her perfume. (Ah, *there’s* that spotlight!) Without her famous face and name, the unremarkable perfume would probably get lost among the many other fragrances at the local drug and discount stores.
Celebrity Designer Perfumes Grow In Popularity
When celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor first introduced their own designer perfumes decades ago, the reaction was mixed. A lot of critics thought celebrity perfumes were just a flash in the pan. But nowadays you don’t have to be a star of Liz Taylor’s magnitude to have your own fragrance. Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker and Britney Spears have joined the ranks of perfume makers, or at least perfume endorsers, and the sale of celebrity fragrances is growing by leaps and bounds. And Liz is still doing very well, thank you, with such perennial favorites as Passion, White Diamonds, and Black Pearls.
